Steel Style, Inc., at its
Hudson River shipyard in Newburgh, N.Y., recently launched
the first half of a large floating drydock, bringing to this
historic Hudson Valley community a renaissance of shipbuilding
activity.
The drydock, when completed,
will become an integral part of the Land Level Submarine Construction
Facility being constructed by General Dynamics Corp., Electric
Boat Division, of Groton, Conn. The facility will be used
to launch and drydock submarines. It was specifically developed
to launch the giant missile-carrying Trident-class nuclear
submarines.
When completed next July,
the finished vessel will measure 500 feet in length and 100
feet in width. This represents the largest “ship”
ever constructed between New York City and the Great Lakes.
Additionally, Steel Style,
Inc. is constructing a floodable caisson-type gate for Morrison-Knudsen
Co., Inc., to be used or a part of the same submarine construction
facility.
Steel Style, Inc., 401 South
Water Street, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550, employs approximately
230 men and has the facilities to construct barges, drydocks
and off-shore drilling vessels. Last year, Steel Style, Inc.
fabricated an erected two 36-million-gallon liquefied natural
gas storage tanks on Staten Island, N.Y., the largest ever
built.
